The digital detox evidence finally includes a real trial. Researchers asked 467 adults to block all mobile internet on their phones for two weeks. Daily phone use roughly halved (Study). What a Digital Detox Is
Most detox advice is vague: delete the apps, put the phone in a drawer, go away for a weekend. Almost none of it has ever been tested properly.
This trial tested one narrow version. Participants blocked mobile internet on their phones for two weeks, so both Wi-Fi and cellular data stopped working. Calls and texts still worked, and so did the internet on a laptop or a tablet (Study).

Inside the Two Week Trial
467 adults took part. Their average age was 32, and about two thirds were women. All were iPhone users in the United States or Canada, recruited online (Study).
A coin flip decided the order, so everyone got a turn. One group blocked mobile internet during weeks one and two. The other carried on as normal, then blocked during weeks three and four (Study).
That second group is what makes the trial credible. While the first group was offline, the second served as the comparison, then ran the same experiment on itself. The drop in phone use repeated, from about five and a half hours a day to a little over three (Study).
The researchers measured three things, three times each. One questionnaire covered depression, anxiety, anger and social worry. A second scored well-being. The authors put two yardsticks against their own numbers. The attention gain was about the size of ten years of normal age-related decline (Study). Where the Freed Time Went
Time in the offline world went up: seeing people in person, exercising, being outdoors, reading, hobbies (Study). Media of every kind went down, including television and YouTube on other devices (Study). Texting and calling did not go up (Study). The habit did not simply move to another screen.
Two feelings shifted too. People felt more socially connected, and they felt more in control of themselves (Study).
The researchers then asked which of those changes carried the mood gains. They tested five: offline time, less media, connection, self-control and sleep. All five helped explain the improvement in well-being and mental health (Study). Self-control did the most work. Sleep did the least, and its result sat right at the edge of chance.
That fits a wider pattern in the research on mood. Time outdoors keeps turning up as one of the cheapest levers, as in the work on 120 minutes a week in nature.

What the Trial Did Not Show
Compliance is the biggest hole in the result. Of the 467 people who signed up, 195 never redeemed the app code (Study). That is about 42 in every 100. Others installed it and then switched the block off again and again. Only 119 people met the bar the team had set in advance: the block active on at least 10 of the 14 days (Study). The authors put it plainly, saying complying was evidently difficult (Study).
So the headline numbers describe what happened to everyone who was asked to block. Most of them blocked part of the time, and many never blocked at all.
The volunteers were also a particular crowd. They answered a call about using their phones less, and most already wanted to cut down. People that motivated may respond better than the general public (Study).
People also knew when their own internet was off. Some of the gain may be the expectation of a gain. No trial of this kind can avoid that.
People who finished every survey were healthier at the start than the people who dropped out (Study). That tilts the result in a flattering direction.
The follow-up was also short. The last measurement came two weeks after the block ended, and daily phone use had climbed back to about 265 minutes (Study). The Wider Digital Detox Evidence
One trial asked 111 students to hold phone use to two hours a day for three weeks. Within that group, depression, stress, sleep and well-being scores all improved (Trial). Two things temper that result. Most people missed the target, and only 24 of the 58 held the limit every week. Reviews that pool every detox trial are far less exciting. One pooled 10 studies covering 2,503 people. Depression scores improved, while life satisfaction, stress and general well-being did not (Meta-analysis).

Block mobile internet during set hours rather than all day. Try evenings, mornings, or one day each weekend. The trial’s own data suggests partial effort counts (Study).
Cap the social apps instead of everything. In one three week trial, 143 undergraduates were held to about half an hour a day across three platforms. They became less lonely and less depressed (Trial). The benefit was largest in students who arrived more depressed.
Batch your notifications instead of killing them. In a field experiment with 237 people, delivering alerts three times a day lowered stress and improved focus (Trial). Switching them off entirely backfired. That group ended up more anxious and more worried about missing something, with no gain in focus at all (Trial). An earlier day-long experiment with 30 volunteers found the same trade (Study).
One follow-up adds a caution. A later analysis of the two hour cap trial tracked an overnight heart measure of physical stress in 45 people.
